Along with five fellow team members from Apostolic Christian World Relief (ACWR), Karla worked out of a room provided by Hospital Lumiere. The group used portable dental equipment as well as supplies they took with them. Karla cleaned teeth and educated adults and children about good oral care, at a cost of $2 per patient. She and her team treated nearly 250 patients while working 8–10 hour days over a five day period in mid-May.Even with the support of a translator, Karla says, “the language barrier remained the most challenging part of the experience.” Excited and appreciative of her trip, she noted, “I am grateful and thankful to God that He has given me this opportunity and ability to serve others.” Karla’s two previous service trips took her to Juarez, Mexico with ACWR and Liberia, Africa with Medical Teams International. Due to a lack of insurance, many Salem area families do not have adequate dental care. Stand for Children was the catalyst—putting these concerns into action. The Dental Health Solutions for Children Committee—a consortium of local dental professionals and community members—was established and meets on a regular basis to network, plan, oversee and evaluate. Oak Park is matched with three local schools to provide emergency services to uninsured children in dental distress. Salem Chamber of Commerce & Keizer Chamber of CommerceOak Park stays connected with our community by being a member of the Chamber of Commerce in both Salem and Keizer.
