Oral thrush is a fungal infection that happens in the mouth. For the most part it is harmless in the early stages and can be reversed by practicing good oral hygiene. But preventing it all together will avoid the risk of it developing further or spreading it to others. Here are easy ways to help prevent oral thrush.
Oral Hygiene
Oral hygiene is the number one way to help prevent many negative oral conditions. Brush twice a day with your own soft bristle toothbrush to prevent both bacterial and fungal spread- floss once a day as well. Make sure the toothbrush is stored in a relatively high area- ideally with a toothbrush protector.
If you know that you won't be eating for an extended period of time, try rinsing with bacteria-killing mouthwash, this is an effective daily habit to get into as it helps to get rid of built-up plaque and can prevent fungal infection. If you live with multiple people, ensure people are rinsing out of paper cups rather than using the cap.
Regular Check-ups
Seeing us every 6 months will largely enable us to catch anything that is not right. We also give you a thorough cleaning to eliminate plaque and tartar. Regular check-ups ties into good oral hygiene due to these 2 reasons alone.
It is not uncommon for patients who think they are completely fine at first, but discover they have an oral health problem small or large. This is why these visits are encouraged universally by dentists- you don't want hidden problems developing into much larger issues such as severe cases of oral thrush!
