Understanding Periodontal Maintenance

Posted on 2/22/2021 by Barbara Ketchum
Understanding Periodontal MaintenanceIn simple terms, periodontal maintenance is a routine examination and cleaning up of any bacterial infections in the oral cavity. The examination also seeks to detect and rule out signs of cancer or abscesses. This is a procedure that is recommended only to people suffering from periodontal disease. Let us first understand what periodontal disease, and then get to its maintenance.

All About Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums, which when left untreated, spreads over the other surfaces of the oral cavity, eventually damaging even the periodontium membrane. The symptoms include inflamed gums, bleeding gums, pus formation, visible gum recession, loose and painful teeth, bad breath, and difficulty in chewing. When these symptoms are noticed early by our professionals, they can be treated effectively.

Importance of Periodontal Maintenance

The first course of treatment involves scaling and root planing. And if the disease is advanced, beyond the scope of scaling and planing then the course of treatment would begin with periodontal surgery. The process of scaling and planing involves scraping the lesions off the gums and the periodontium membrane. This is done when one is diagnosed with periodontal disease.

Routine periodontal maintenance should be scheduled with us every three to four months. It is meant to clean up the oral cavity of any infection which is why it is called maintenance. Periodontal disease, like diabetes or blood pressure, is a condition that requires routine monitoring and maintenance.

Routine periodontal maintenance helps sustain good oral health for the rest of your life. If this is not done regularly, the disease can progress and spread to other areas of your mouth. This is why you should contact us for scheduling regular periodontal maintenance. Our professionals will be glad to assist you and answer any questions you may have.
