Oil Pulling – Benefits and How to Do It

Posted on 1/11/2021 by Barbara Ketchum
Oil Pulling – Benefits and How to Do ItOil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice. It involves swishing or 'pulling' oil in your mouth. While it sounds simple enough, there is a proper technique to do it. Moreover, when done correctly, it offers various benefits for your dental health.

How to Do Oil Pulling

Here's the right way to pull oil through your mouth for the best results and maximum benefits. Start by measuring out one tablespoon of oil. This can be coconut oil, olive oil, sesame oil or other similar oils that are good for your teeth.

Take this into your mouth and start swishing it around. If it's your first time, start by doing it for just five minutes and then, over time, you can increase the time to 15 to 20 minutes. Be careful not to swallow any of the oil.

Once you're done swishing, spit it out into a garbage can. Avoid spitting in your sink as the oil can clog the pipes. For the final step, rinse your mouth with regular water to remove any leftover traces of the oil. You can do this on a daily basis or several times a week according to your preference.

Benefits of Oil Pulling

There are several benefits to incorporating oil pulling as part of your oral hygiene routine.

Kills Bacteria

The swishing motion of the oil helps kill or remove the bacteria building up on the teeth and inside the mouth. As a result, it helps prevent various diseases and dental problems. It helps fight cavities and prevents tooth decay.

Helps with Bad Breath

The removal of bacteria from the tongue also helps with bad breath. With overall improved oral hygiene and reduced bacteria, the oil pulling promotes odor-free breath.

Improves Gum Health

The oil also helps reduce gum inflammation and improve its overall health for strong gums. This helps prevent gum diseases as well.
As amazing as oil pulling sounds, make sure you use the right kind of oil and follow the proper way to reap all its benefits.
