Your Teeth Get a Lot Out Of You Eating Fibrous Foods

Posted on 12/7/2020 by Barbara Ketchum
Your Teeth Get a Lot Out Of You Eating Fibrous FoodsIt is easier to prevent dental ailments than it is to cure them. Eating a diet that is high in fibrous foods is a good way of preventing tooth decay and gum disease.

Why Are Fibrous Foods So Good For Oral Health?

High fIber foods generally require more chewing than other foods. Chewing is very good for oral health because chewing food stimulates the production of saliva in the mouth. Saliva has natural antibacterial properties that fight the bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease. Saliva also helps clear your teeth of food particles, especially when chewing fibrous foods such as celery which can act as a toothbrush. The best dietary fiber is found in dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach and broccoli. These vegetables are also high in calcium which helps to maintain healthy teeth. Crunchy fruit and vegetable such as apples, celery, pears and carrots are also particularly good for your teeth. Beware of pills, powders and gummies that contain fiber as these don't require any chewing and so cannot do much to help your dental health. In addition, these supplements may well contain sugar which causes tooth decay.

Holistic Benefits of the High Fiber Diet

The high fiber diet does more than just help your dental health; it is good for your whole body. For instance, high fiber foods help prevent heart disease and high blood pressure. They are good for the digestive system, helping to prevent irritable bowel syndrome, constipation and diarrhea. The high fiber diet boosts endocrine health by helping to regulate blood sugar which helps prevent obesity and type two diabetes.

It is very important that your teeth are kept in excellent condition so that they can happily chomp away at the high fiber foods that are so good for your health which is where we come in. Visit us regularly so that we can make sure that your teeth are healthy and can always chew through healthy high fiber foods.
