How Dental Debridement Improves Your Oral Health

Posted on 4/25/2020 by Barbara Ketchum
How Dental Debridement Improves Your Oral Health Have you heard of debridement? If not, read the following information, as this treatment can improve your oral health. If you have not had regular professional cleanings, you may benefit from a dental debridement. Debridement involves the removal of plaque and calculus so that we can perform a more thorough examination. This type of tooth care involves the use of special scaling tools and an ultrasonic device. While this type of cleaning takes longer, it is necessary to remove excess build-up.

Why Debridement Is Necessary

To get a better view of a patient's teeth, we need to schedule debridement to thoroughly clean the teeth and gums. This allows us to get a better view of the mouth, gums, and teeth without plaque and tartar diminishing our efforts. After debridement, we check for cavities and the gumline is probed to check for gum disease and to make sure the bone is health. While this type of cleaning may take a longer to perform that a regular prophylaxis, it is well worth it. Once debridement is completed, a checkup can be performed. If you are worried about any discomfort, ask our office about what pain management techniques we use.

What Can I Do to Prevent This Extensive Type of Cleaning in the Future?

To keep your teeth clean and problem-free, you need to brush for two minutes at least twice daily. Generally, it is best to brush in the morning after breakfast or before going to sleep at night. If you tend to get more than your fair share of calculus deposits, you need to make sure that you follow a regular course of suggested dental hygiene. Use a soft toothbrush when brushing, covering areas, such as the teeth, gums, cheeks, and tongue. Flossing at least once a day will keep any deposits from forming in hard-to-reach areas of the mouth. One we perform a debridement; you just need to follow a regular program of good at-home dental hygiene. You also need to visit our office every six months to ensure that your teeth remain freer of plaque and tartar. We will make it easy for you to do by scheduling automatic six-month appointments for cleanings and exams.
