Is an Oral Appliance Necessary When You Struggle with Bruxism?

Is an Oral Appliance Necessary When You Struggle with Bruxism? If you suffer from bruxism, you need some type of intervention in order to help with the condition. Clenching and grinding the teeth can lead to long-term consequences. While some dental patients wear an oral appliance for bruxism treatment, it isn't the only option available.

What is an Oral Appliance?

An oral appliance is a guard that fits like a sports guard, and it is only worn during sleep. It supports the jaw by keeping it in a forward position to ensure the airway stays open. Research has shown that it is an effective way to treat obstructive sleep apnea and snoring, and many patients appreciate it because it is portable, quiet, and easy to wear. Some patients also use oral appliances to protect the teeth from bruxism.

Bruxism appliances work to protect the teeth against nighttime clenching and grinding. This activity puts unnecessary stress onto the teeth and jaw bone. Over time, the top surfaces of the teeth could flatten, and in severe cases, the teeth may even break or shift positions. A bruxism appliance or mouth guard can help.

Are There Other Ways to Treat Bruxism?

While an oral appliance is certainly helpful in bruxism cases, it only prevents the symptoms and doesn't get to the bottom of the problem. Most people clench and grind their teeth due to stress or anxiety, so treatment should be pursued in those areas. The right medication could make a world of difference in stress levels and may stop the patient's bruxism altogether. Breathing techniques, mediation, some yoga practices, and even talk therapy could also help to decrease stress levels.

Are you struggling with bruxism and need to find the right treatment plan? If so, please call our office today to set up an appointment. We will provide a dental cleaning and will thoroughly evaluate your bruxism issue.
