Do All Beverages Aside from Water Stain Your Teeth?

Posted on 4/25/2019 by Barbara Ketchum
Do All Beverages Aside from Water Stain Your Teeth? When it comes to beverages that help you maintain a healthy, stain-free smile, water is the best. Water helps to flush away acids, food particles, and bacteria that can all cause stains.

Unlike wine and coffee, water is clear and doesn't contain dark-colored tannins that can leave stains behind on the enamel. Fortunately, like water, there are a few other drinks that you can enjoy that also won't cause stains.

White Tea

Many studies have examined the benefits of tea on oral health. While green and black varieties offer antioxidant powers, they may still lead to stains. White tea is a better option for the teeth and your body. While it is derived from the same plant as green tea, it goes through minimal processing and is less likely to stain. Studies have also found that white tea can prevent gum disease and cavities.

Milk

Milk is a great drink for oral health for many reasons. It is full of calcium, which the teeth need to remain strong. It is light in color and not acidic, so on its own, it also won't lead to stains.

Another benefit to milk is that it can prevent other beverages from staining. So, if you choose to drink a cup of coffee or dark tea, adding milk can minimize the risk of stains. Milk contains a protein called casein, which attaches to tannin molecules in dark colored beverages. This prevents them from sticking to the teeth.

Rooibos Herbal Tea

Technically, Rooibos is a tisane, not a tea, and it doesn't contain many of the teeth-staining components found in typical tea. Sometimes called the coffee drinkers' tea, Rooibos has a low potential for stains and is still a comforting beverage to drink in the morning.

Choosing the right foods and beverages is helpful in minimizing stains, and regular dental visits are also important. Call us today for your next cleaning and to discuss tooth whitening options.
