What Dental Chips Can Do to Hurt Your Overall Oral Health

Posted on 9/23/2018 by Barbara Ketchum
What Dental Chips Can Do to Hurt Your Overall Oral HealthChipped teeth may be aesthetically bothersome, especially if they occurred in the front teeth. However, some people believe that as long as the tooth doesn't hurt, there is no need to treat it.

There are actually some important risks when it comes to dental chips and your oral health, so it is important to get them treated as soon as possible.

Why Do Teeth Chip?

The teeth are strong, but that doesn't make them completely immune to breakage. There are a variety of reasons that your tooth might chip:

•  A blow to the face or trauma due to a fall
•  Clenching and grinding of the teeth
•  Biting into an especially hard food item
•  Chewing on a pen or other non-food item

Also, teeth with old fillings could break, causing chips and other problems with the tooth structure.

Why Should You Treat Your Chipped Tooth?

If your tooth chips, it might not be painful. However, damage has clearly been done to the tooth, and the chipped portion may irritate your inner cheek or tongue. This could result in ulcers or other damage to the soft tissues of your mouth.

Another problem with a chip is that the damage could be more than purely cosmetic. If there is a crack that extends toward the root, you could experience a variety of unpleasant sensations. These include sensitivity to cold or hot temperature extremes, leading to unbearable toothaches.

The pain may also be extreme when biting or chewing, so you'll need dental treatment to prevent any further damage. In extreme cases, a root canal may be needed.

If you damage your teeth, don't delay giving our office a call. Whether it is a minor chip or a crack that extends the entire length of your tooth, we can help. We offer many innovative treatment options that will restore both the structure and function right away.
