Coconut, sunflower, and sesame oils are used most often, and after a thorough swishing, the oil is spit out. This practice has shown some benefits to the oral health, so it may be worth a try for patients who need a boost to their dental hygiene. Benefits of Oil PullingStudies have recently identified benefits of oil pulling on the teeth. Oil pulling can clean the teeth by getting into small crevices around the molars that a toothbrush cannot reach. Plus, these oils function to break down bacteria, which is the root cause of cavity formation, gum disease, and bad breath.Coconut oil is the most highly recommended of all oils when it comes to this practice. This medium-chain fatty acid is known to inhibit the chief bacterial responsible for causing cavities - Streptococcus mutans. Coconut oil can also protect the mouth against yeast infections, like oral thrush. Tips for Oil PullingIf you do wish to try oil pulling, there are a few tips that can help ease you into it. First, don't try to swish for 20 minutes right away. Start off with only five minutes a day, and as your comfort level grows, you can add on more time. If you experience any jaw pain, be sure to stop and take a break.It is also important to note that you should never swallow the oil. If you find it difficult to keep all of the oil in your mouth, start with a smaller amount. Discard the oil into a trash can rather than your sink.
