What Might You Feel?

A bad taste or odor in your mouth can also indicate an abscess. The pus from the infection can leak into your mouth, creating an unpleasant taste or smell. This can be a sign that the abscess has ruptured, but it doesn't mean the infection is gone!

Sometimes, an abscess can lead to more systemic symptoms, meaning they affect your whole body. You might develop a fever, feel generally unwell, or experience swollen lymph nodes in your neck. These are signs that the infection is spreading, and it's important to seek help immediately.

Ignoring an abscess can have serious consequences. The infection can spread to other parts of your body, leading to more severe health problems. In rare cases, it can even be life-threatening.

Prevention and Maintenance

Good oral care is key to preventing abscesses. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist regularly can help keep your teeth and gums healthy. Early detection of cavities and gum disease can prevent them from progressing to the point where an abscess forms.

Furthermore, procedures done in restoration dentistry help to preserve and protect your teeth. By doing so, it can help to reduce the potential for infection and abscess formation in the first place.
