What Causes Dental Cracks?

Posted on 6/1/2026 by Dr. Sam Kelly
Man with jaw and overall mouth pain. Have you ever felt a sharp pain when biting down, or noticed a strange line on your tooth? It might be a dental crack. Understanding what causes these cracks is important for maintaining good oral care and knowing when to seek professional help. Let's explore the common culprits behind these often-overlooked issues.

Bite Problems and Clenching

One of the biggest reasons teeth crack is due to the pressure we put on them. When your bite isn't aligned correctly, some teeth might take on more force than others. This uneven distribution can create stress points, leading to cracks over time. Similarly, many people clench or grind their teeth, especially at night without even realizing it. This constant pressure, known as bruxism, is like repeatedly bending a paperclip – eventually, it's going to break.

Temperature Changes

Think about pouring hot water into a cold glass – it can shatter. Your teeth experience something similar. Eating or drinking something very hot followed by something very cold (or vice versa) causes your teeth to expand and contract rapidly. This constant expansion and contraction can weaken the enamel, the hard outer layer of your teeth, making them more susceptible to dental cracks.

Trauma and Injuries

A direct blow to the mouth, whether from a sports injury, a fall, or an accident, can obviously cause a tooth to crack. Even seemingly minor incidents can create small fractures that worsen over time. It’s important to be extra cautious and wear appropriate mouth protection during activities where your mouth could be at risk.

Fillings and Tooth Structure

While fillings are essential for repairing cavities, large fillings can actually weaken the remaining tooth structure. The filling material doesn't bond perfectly with the tooth, and over time, the natural tooth around the filling can become more prone to cracking. This is especially true for older amalgam fillings, which expand and contract more than tooth-colored composite fillings.

Age and Tooth Wear

Just like anything else, our teeth experience wear and tear as we age. Years of chewing, biting, and grinding take their toll. The enamel gradually weakens, and tiny cracks can develop, especially in people over 50.

How to Protect Your Teeth

While some factors, like age, are unavoidable, there are many things you can do to minimize your risk of developing dental cracks.
•  Wear a mouthguard: If you play sports or grind your teeth at night, a custom-fitted mouthguard can protect your teeth from trauma and excessive pressure.
•  Avoid extreme temperature changes: Try to avoid quickly switching between hot and cold foods or drinks.
•  Maintain good oral hygiene: Brushing and flossing regularly helps keep your teeth strong and healthy.
•  See your dentist regularly: Regular checkups allow your dentist to identify potential problems early, when they are easier to address with restoration dentistry.

Understanding the causes of dental cracks is the first step in preventing them. By taking proactive steps to protect your teeth, you can keep your smile healthy and strong for years to come. If you experience any pain or sensitivity in your teeth, don't hesitate to consult with a dental professional. Early intervention is key to managing and treating dental cracks effectively.
