My Child Won't Floss!

Posted on 3/2/2026 by Dr. Sam Kelly
Woman smiling, while flossing. Getting kids to do things they don’t want to do can be tough. Brushing their teeth can feel like a battle sometimes, but getting them to floss? That can seem impossible! Many parents struggle with this, so know that you're not alone. Let’s talk about why flossing is so important for kids and some ways to make it a little easier.

Why Flossing Matters for Young Smiles

Flossing is a crucial part of good oral care, even for kids. While brushing cleans the surfaces of the teeth, floss is the only way to remove plaque and food particles from between them. Think of it like this: your toothbrush is a lawnmower that cuts the grass on the lawn, and floss is like the weed whacker that gets the edges!

When plaque isn't removed, it can lead to cavities, also known as tooth decay. Cavities aren't just painful; they can also affect a child's ability to eat, speak, and learn. Plus, establishing good flossing habits early on sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy gums and teeth. Gum disease, which starts as gingivitis, can affect people of all ages. Flossing helps keep gums healthy by removing the bacteria that causes inflammation.

Making Flossing Fun (Or At Least Tolerable!)

So, how do you get a child who resists flossing to actually do it? Here are some tips:
•  Start Early: Begin flossing as soon as your child has two teeth that touch. This gets them used to the feeling of floss in their mouth from a young age. You'll be doing the flossing for them at this stage.
•  Lead by Example: Kids learn by watching. Let your child see you flossing regularly. Explain why you're doing it and how it helps keep your teeth healthy. You can even floss together!
•  Make it a Routine: Incorporate flossing into your child's daily oral care routine. Floss after brushing at night, so it becomes a habit.
•  Use Fun Tools: There are lots of different types of flossers available. Some are flavored, some have fun handles, and some are even designed specifically for kids. Let your child choose their own flosser.
•  Make it a Game: Turn flossing into a game. You could play "I Spy" and have your child try to floss out a specific piece of food. Or, you could time them to see how quickly they can floss all their teeth.
•  Be Patient and Positive: It takes time to develop a new habit. Be patient with your child and offer lots of encouragement. Celebrate small victories, like flossing just a few teeth.

Prevention Dentistry and Flossing

Flossing is a key element of prevention dentistry. Regular flossing helps prevent cavities and gum disease, which can save you and your child from future dental problems. Think of it as an investment in your child's long-term oral health.

When to Seek Professional Help

If you're struggling to get your child to floss, don't hesitate to talk to your dentist or dental hygienist. They can offer personalized advice and demonstrate proper flossing techniques. They can also identify any areas of concern in your child's mouth and recommend appropriate treatment.

Flossing doesn't have to be a battle. By starting early, making it fun, and being patient, you can help your child develop a lifelong habit of good oral care. Remember, a healthy smile starts with prevention!
