How to Stop Cavities from Forming Between Teeth

Posted on 12/15/2025 by Dr. Sam Kelly
Woman smile close up. Let's talk about something that affects nearly everyone at some point: cavities. We all want a healthy smile, and that means understanding how to keep those pesky cavities from forming, especially in those hard-to-reach places between our teeth. These areas are prime real estate for bacteria and food particles, making them a common spot for decay. But don't worry, with the right approach to oral care, you can significantly reduce your risk!

Understanding Interproximal Cavities

"Interproximal" is just a fancy word dentists use to describe the surfaces of your teeth that touch each other. Because these surfaces are so close together, it's easy for plaque and food to get trapped. Plaque is a sticky film made of bacteria that feeds on sugars and starches. When these bacteria digest the sugars, they produce acids that eat away at your tooth enamel, leading to cavities. The good news is that these cavities are preventable with consistent and proper oral hygiene.

The Power of Flossing

Flossing is your first line of defense. Think of your toothbrush as a street sweeper – it cleans the big, easy-to-reach surfaces. Floss, on the other hand, is like a detail crew that gets into the nooks and crannies. Floss removes the plaque and food particles that your toothbrush can't reach. Make sure you're using the proper technique. Gently slide the floss between your teeth, curve it into a "C" shape around each tooth, and move it up and down to clean the surface. Don't just snap it in and out!

Choosing the Right Floss

There are many types of floss available: waxed, unwaxed, flavored, and even floss picks. Experiment to find one you like and will use consistently. If you have tight spaces between your teeth, waxed floss might be easier to slide in. If you have wider spaces, a thicker floss or even a dental tape might be more effective. Some patients prefer interdental brushes, which are small, bristled brushes designed to clean between teeth. These can be particularly helpful if you have braces or larger gaps.

Boosting Your Oral Care Routine

Flossing isn't the only weapon in your arsenal. A fluoride toothpaste is essential for strengthening your enamel and helping to repair early signs of decay. Fluoride helps to remineralize the tooth surface, making it more resistant to acid attacks. Brushing twice a day for two minutes each time is crucial.

Diet Matters

What you eat plays a significant role in your oral health. Frequent snacking, especially on sugary or starchy foods, provides a constant fuel source for the bacteria in your mouth. Try to limit sugary drinks, candy, and processed foods. Instead, focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These foods are not only good for your overall health, but they also help to stimulate saliva flow, which helps to neutralize acids and wash away food particles.

The Importance of Regular Dental Visits and Prevention Dentistry

Regular check-ups are a key part of prevention dentistry. Your dentist and hygienist can identify early signs of decay that you might miss. They can also provide professional cleanings to remove hardened plaque (tartar) that you can't remove with brushing and flossing alone. Professional fluoride treatments can also give your enamel an extra boost of protection. These regular visits allow your dentist to provide personalized advice on how to improve your oral hygiene and prevent future cavities.
