3 Options for Fixing a Cracked Tooth

Posted on 7/15/2025 by Dr. Sam Kelly
Cracked tooth graphic. A cracked tooth can be a painful and worrying experience. It's important to seek professional help as soon as possible to prevent further damage and complications. But with so many treatment options available, it can be overwhelming to know where to start.

This article will discuss three common options for fixing a cracked tooth: bonding, crowns, and root canals. By understanding each option, you can make an informed decision about the best course of treatment for your specific situation.

Bonding: A minimally invasive solution for small cracks

Dental bonding is a relatively simple and non-invasive procedure that can be used to repair small cracks in the tooth. It involves applying a composite resin material to the tooth, which is then shaped and hardened with a special light. Bonding is a good option for cracks that do not involve the pulp (the inner part of the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels).

Pros:
•  Minimally invasive
•  Relatively inexpensive
•  Can be completed in a single visit

Cons:
•  Not suitable for large cracks
•  May not be as durable as other options

Crowns: Restoring strength and functionality

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over the entire tooth. Crowns are used to restore the strength and functionality of a tooth that has been cracked or damaged. They can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain, gold, or a combination of both.

Pros:
•  Provides excellent protection for the tooth
•  Can be used to restore the shape and appearance of the tooth
•  Long-lasting

Cons:
•  More expensive than bonding
•  Requires removal of more tooth structure
•  May require multiple appointments

Root canals: Addressing damage to the pulp

A root canal is a more complex procedure that is needed when the crack in the tooth has extended to the pulp. This procedure involves removing the damaged pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and then filling it with a special material. A crown is usually placed on the tooth after a root canal to protect it.

Pros:
•  Saves the tooth from extraction
•  Alleviates pain and infection
•  Can be a long-term solution

Cons:
•  Most invasive option
•  More expensive than other options
•  Requires multiple appointments

Choosing the right option for you

The best option for fixing your cracked tooth will depend on the severity of the crack, the location of the crack, and your individual needs and preferences. It's important to discuss all of your options with your dentist so that you can make an informed decision about the best course of treatment for you.
