Can You Drink Sparkling Water Instead of Tap Water for Good Oral Health?

Posted on 3/15/2025 by Dan O'Leary DDS
When it comes to oral care, most of us know the importance of brushing and flossing regularly. But what about the drinks we consume? Believe it or not, the type of water you choose can actually have an impact on your oral health.

While tap water is a good source of hydration, some people prefer the bubbly口感 of sparkling water. But can it offer the same benefits for your teeth as regular water?

Sparkling Water: The Good, the Bad, and the Bubbly

The good news is that sparkling water, like still water, is calorie-free and sugar-free. This means it won't contribute to tooth decay, unlike sugary drinks like soda or juice. In fact, some research suggests that sparkling water can even help to neutralize the acids produced by plaque bacteria, which are a major contributor to cavities.

However, there are some potential downsides to sparkling water. Many brands contain phosphoric acid and citric acid, which can erode tooth enamel over time. This can make your teeth more susceptible to cavities and sensitivity.

Choosing the Right Sparkling Water for Oral Health

If you enjoy the taste of sparkling water, there are ways to minimize its potential impact on your oral health.

•  Look for brands that are low in acidity. Some brands have a pH level closer to 7, which is considered neutral and less damaging to teeth.
•  Choose brands with no added sugars or artificial sweeteners. These can contribute to cavities and other oral health problems.
•  Drink in moderation. Limit your sparkling water intake to a few glasses per day, and be sure to rinse your mouth with plain water afterwards.
•  Don't use it as a mixer for alcohol. Alcohol can dehydrate you and increase your risk of cavities, and mixing it with sparkling water only amplifies these effects.

The Bottom Line: Water is Water, Sparkling or Not

The best choice for oral health is plain water, whether it's tap water, bottled water, or sparkling water. If you choose sparkling water, just be sure to choose brands with low acidity, no added sugars, and drink it in moderation. And remember, no matter what kind of water you drink, be sure to brush and floss regularly for optimal oral health.
