Row of five toy teeth, all smiling except for the middle tooth which frowns because of tooth decay at Oak Park Dental in Salem, ORWe often hear that cavities are caused by poor dental hygiene or a diet high in sugar.

While these factors certainly play a role, did you know that cavities can also be contagious?

It’s true!

This means that cavities can be passed from person to person, just like a cold or the flu.

How Are Cavities Spread?

Cavities are caused by bacteria. These bacteria live in our mouths and feed on sugars and carbohydrates.

As they break down these foods, they produce acid. This acid can erode tooth enamel, the hard, outer layer of our teeth, leading to cavities.

These bacteria can be spread through saliva. This means that cavities can be passed from person to person through activities such as:

•  Sharing utensils or drinks
•  Kissing
•  Sharing food
•  Using someone else’s toothbrush

Who Is at Risk?

Anyone can get cavities, but some people are at higher risk than others. This includes:
•  Young children
•  People with poor dental hygiene
•  People who eat a lot of sugary foods and drinks
•  People with dry mouth
•  People with weakened immune systems

How Can I Protect Myself from Cavities?

There are several things you can do to protect yourself from cavities, including:

•  Brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
•  Flossing daily to remove plaque and food debris from between your teeth.
•  Eating a healthy diet low in sugar.
•  Seeing your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.
•  Using mouthwash with fluoride.
•  Drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated.
•  Avoiding sharing utensils, drinks, and food.

Conclusion

Most people don’t know that cavities are contagious. However, it is important to be aware of this so you can take steps to protect yourself and your family.

By practicing good oral hygiene and following the tips above, you can help keep your smile healthy and cavity-free.
