Connection Between Oral Health And Respiratory Infections

Posted on 6/19/2023 by Barbara Ketchum
Connection Between Oral Health And Respiratory InfectionsOral health is critical to our overall well-being, and research has shown a connection between oral health and respiratory infections. Poor oral hygiene can lead to the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth, which can then be inhaled into the lungs, leading to respiratory infections.

There Is A Relation Between Oral Health And Respiratory Infections

When we breathe, the air we inhale passes through our mouth, nose, and lungs. If we have poor oral hygiene, harmful bacteria can accumulate in the mouth and throat, making it easier for these bacteria to be inhaled into the lungs. Once in the lungs, these bacteria can cause pneumonia, bronchitis, and other respiratory illnesses.

Additionally, people with gum disease or periodontitis have a higher risk of developing respiratory infections. These conditions cause inflammation in the gums, leading to the breakdown of tissue and bone that support the teeth. This inflammation can also weaken the immune system, making it easier for harmful bacteria to enter the body and cause infections.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is important to reduce the risk of respiratory infections. This includes brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist regularly for cleanings and check-ups. Quitting smoking is also crucial, as it can worsen gum disease and respiratory infections and cause other diseases.

To summarize, there is an undeniable correlation between one's dental health and the prevalence of respiratory infections. Taking care of your dental health may enhance your general health and lower the likelihood of an upper respiratory infection.

Do not allow your oral troubles to go untreated. To take the first step toward a healthier and more radiant smile, please call or email our dental office as soon as possible to make an appointment.
