Dental Care Tips For The Elderly

Posted on 1/9/2023 by Barbara Ketchum
Dental Care Tips For The ElderlyRegular dental visits are essential for elderly dental health. Infrequent or nonexistent visits can permit problems to worsen and become more severe. Seniors should schedule cleaning appointments at least twice per year or as directed by our dentist. One of the most important things you can do for oral health is to maintain a regular appointment schedule. Your dentist can advise you on the best way to care for your teeth and check for any conditions that may be diagnosed before they become a severe health concern.

Regular Teeth Brushing

Most of the time, doctors and dentists advise patients to brush their teeth at least twice daily, in the morning and before bed. Many seniors should already be in the habit of brushing their teeth twice a day, but for those who want to improve their oral hygiene routine, brushing twice a day is an absolute must. Dentists often recommend electric toothbrushes to help people brush their teeth better. Whether your toothbrush is electric or not, you should replace it or its head at least every three months. You will also want to ensure you are using the right bristle strength. Dentists recommend using a soft toothbrush, but if you have gum disease, your dentist may advise on a hard one.

Less Sugar Consumption

Consuming sugary foods and beverages promotes cavities, tooth decay, and periodontal disease. If you occasionally have a sugary dessert or drink a sweet tea or soda, brush your teeth shortly afterward.

Frequently Flossing

Although flossing is crucial to maintaining good oral health, many people fail to accomplish it daily. Seniors who regularly floss generally achieve better dental health and lower their risk of developing cavities and gum disease. The advantages of flossing far outweigh any perceived inconvenience. It is a quick and simple way to care for your teeth.
