How Do Cavities FormPlaque on the teeth contains living bacteria and is the main factor in cavity formation. If proper dental care and healthy oral care are neglected, cavities are the result. Cavities are tooth decay and break down the hard tooth tissues. Cavities are caused by the bacteria acids that are found in plaque. The demineralization of the teeth can cause the formation of cavities and require professional treatment. Without treatment, the decay can destroy your mouth. Luckily, your dentist can remove the decay from the teeth and fill the cavities.

Tooth Decay Stages


Stage 1 consists of early decay that looks like a white or brown spot on the tooth's surface. Using fluoride toothpaste when you brush your teeth may prevent the site from becoming a cavity. Stage 2 tooth decay occurs when the present decay has made its way through the hard tooth enamel. Stage 3 is when the tooth structure gets destroyed quickly because the layers under the enamel are soft. Stage 4 of decay is when even more extensive problems are caused in the tooth if the cavity is not filled.

Preventing Cavities


Having a daily routine of using an antiseptic mouthwash, flossing, and brushing with fluoride toothpaste will reduce bacteria, so less acid is created. Fluoride makes tooth enamel stronger and aids in cavity prevention. Dental experts recommend going to the dentist every six months for a professional cleaning and a dental exam. It is also essential to limit your sugary food and drink consumption because sugar feeds the bacteria present in your mouth and can start a decaying process. Other factors such as tobacco use, eating disorders, and alcoholism contribute to tooth decay problems. Make sure to tell your dentist if you have any medical conditions and inform them of any medications that you are taking, along with if you smoke, drink, or have an eating disorder. Some of these can lead to tooth decay and can explain why it is occurring in the first place.m
