Oral sedation is a form of conscious sedation. What this means is that you are awake through the duration of your procedure, but you are made to be drowsy. This particular type of sedation involves the use of a medication that you take by mouth, before coming in for your procedure. Common oral sedatives include diazepam, lorazepam, and alprazolam. We provide you with a prescription so that you can have the medication ready before you come in for your appointment. Regardless of the medication, you are prescribed, it should be taken approximately an hour before you are due to come in. In general, the medication kicks in after about 30 minutes, but the exact time your medication will go to work for you depends upon several factors (what you have eaten, your weight, etc.). For this reason, it is essential that you have someone who can drive you to your appointment.
Just as the time the medication kicks in is unpredictable, so, too, is the time at which it wears off. The effects of the oral sedation can linger for several hours. So, it is just as essential that you have someone to drive you home.
