Dentures and Partial Denture

Dentures and Partial Dentures at Oak Park DentalYour teeth have several essential responsibilities that they perform every day. When you lose your teeth, whether it’s a few of them or all of them, your entire quality of life is significantly affected. You may find it more difficult to eat and speak. Your smile may be affected (diminishing your confidence). At Oak Park Dental, we can help to replace your missing teeth, restoring your quality of life, with dentures and partial dentures.

What Causes Tooth Loss?

There are numerous causes of tooth loss. One of the biggest causes is gum (periodontal) disease. With advanced stages of gum disease, oral bacteria have made their way under the gum line. There, they attack your periodontal ligaments and your jawbone, weakening them. This leads to loose teeth and tooth loss. Other causes of tooth loss include:
•  Facial/oral trauma (car accident, sports related injury, fall).
•  Bruxism (grinding and clenching of your teeth).
•  Poor oral hygiene, which can lead to gum disease.
•  Smoking, or other tobacco products.

What are Dentures?

Dentures have been in use for hundreds of years as a way to replace missing teeth. Today’s dentures, however, are nothing like their original counterparts. In fact, dentures today were vastly different from dentures just a couple of decades ago. Thanks to technological developments, dentures are made to appear more natural and feel more comfortable.

Dentures are a removable prosthetic device. They consist of acrylic resin teeth set into an acrylic, gum colored base. Dentures are made from impressions of your mouth and are designed to be supported by your gums, and they are held in place by suction. They are meant to be removed nightly for cleaning and to give your gums an opportunity to rest.

Dentures Vs. Partial Dentures

Dentures, sometimes referred to specifically as full dentures, are made to replace an entire arch (or both) of missing teeth. If you have any teeth remaining in the arch that are unhealthy, these teeth will first be extracted. Impressions of your mouth are then taken, which are used to design and create your custom dentures.

A partial denture is made to replace sections of missing teeth, helping to avoid the need to remove perfectly healthy teeth. Partial dentures are made similarly to full dentures. They are similar in structure, as well, consisting of false teeth in a gum colored base. Partial dentures, however, also have metal clasps, which attach to adjacent teeth and provide additional support.

Caring for Your Dentures

Dentures do require a bit of extra care. They should be removed each night for cleaning. Before removing your dentures, lay a towel on your counter, or fill your sink with water. This provides a cushion in the event you accidentally drop your dentures. Brush your dentures with a soft bristled toothbrush and denture paste (or soap and water). Do not use toothpaste, as the abrasives it contains can leave microscopic scratches (which can harbor bacteria) on your dentures. When you are done, soak your dentures in a denture cleaning solution. Before you go to bed, brush your gums, any remaining teeth, and your other oral tissues. In the morning, brush your gums (and teeth) again, rinse your dentures, and set them in place.

Benefits of Dentures

Dentures offer several benefits:
•  You can normally eat again, which can improve your digestion and nutrition.
•  Speech is restored.
•  Partial dentures help to hold your healthy teeth in place.
•  Your smile and your confidence are restored.
