Oak Park Dental hygienist, Karla Dettwyler, recently volunteered her time providing dental care and education to residents of Haiti.
In addition to seeing patients locally, one of our hygienist’s, Karla Dettwyler, recently volunteered her time to provide dental care to the people of Bonne Fin, Haiti, her third such service trip. Along with five fellow team members from Apostolic Christian World Relief (ACWR), Karla worked out of a room provided by Hospital Lumiere . The group used portable dental equipment as well as supplies they took with them. Karla cleaned teeth and educated adults and children about good oral care, at a cost of $2 per patient. She and her team treated nearly 250 patients while working 8-10 hour days over a five day period in mid-May.
Even with the support of a translator, Karla says, “the language barrier remained the most challenging part of the experience.” Excited and appreciative of her trip, she noted, “I am grateful and thankful to God that He has given me this opportunity and ability to serve others.”Karla’s two, previous service trips took her to Juarez, Mexico with ACWR and Liberia, Africa with Medical Teams International. If you are interested in supporting volunteer dental efforts like Karla’s and want to help those in need, you can make an online donation through www.acworldrelief.org.
Your Oak Park Dental family is proud of your generosity in providing dental care to the people in Haiti, Karla. Nice work!

Family Building Blocks FAQ
We’re love our wonderful, giving Oak Park Dental patients. Thanks to each of you who contributed to this year’s Family Building Blocks Diaper Drive. An all-time record of over 11,000 diapers was collected by our office in conjunction with Les Schwab Tires and Salem Keizer schools. All items collected will go directly to families in our community.
Dental Health Solutions
In the year 2000, community surveys identified dental disease as the greatest unmet medical need among our children. Due to a lack of insurance, many Salem area families do not have adequate dental care. Stand for Children was the catalyst – putting these concerns into action. The Dental Health Solutions for Children Committee–a consortium of local dental professionals and community members–was established and meets on a regular basis to network, plan, oversee and evaluate. Oak Park is matched with three local schools to provide emergency services to uninsured children in dental distress.
Medical Teams International Dental Van
The van’s mission is to provide dental care to low-income, homeless or migrant farm worker populations who have no insurance or realistic way to pay for treatment. More than 1 million people in Oregon and Washington live at or below the federal poverty level. Dr. O’Leary and Dr Palandech donate dental care on the van.
Smiles for Kids
Since 2000, Oak Park Dental has raised over $38,000 for children’s charities including Family Building Blocks and Liberty House.
Oak Park stays connected with our community by being a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Their mission is to serve as your business and community advocate and work to keep Salem a great place where business can prosper and families can live, work, play and shop.
